EYE CONTACT LENSES: ARE THEY BETTER THAN GLASSES?

Which one is really better: contact lenses or glasses?

This argument is as heated as choosing between a cat or a dog as a favourite pet. Some may prefer both, while others prefer only one of them and stick to it. The answer to this depends on your lifestyle, condition, personal preferences, and comfort.

However, with all the misconception about contact lenses, many people hesitate to try them. It’s important to know that contact lenses are actually very safe to wear as long as you observe proper hygiene. Also, thanks to the advances in contact lens technology, most people can wear contacts successfully nowadays.

Here are reasons why you should consider giving contact lenses a go.

Comfortable and clearer vision

Contacts settle on the curvature of your eye, giving it a wide and sharp focus. Unlike glasses, contacts don’t get affected by weather conditions and don’t come with reflection and distortions.

Engage in vigorous activity

Contacts don’t bounce around your face when you run or jump. This is why people who play sports prefer to use contacts, as this allows them to participate better in the game.

Better peripheral vision

Glasses reduce the form of your peripheral vision. The use of contact lenses allows a broader and clearer peripheral vision, which is why people who drive for a living make contacts a necessity.

Contacts nowadays have become lower maintenance, but generally, they still require cleaning, disinfecting, and proper storage. To avoid any eye infection, it’s best to keep them clean and replaced when they have already expired. You should also be careful with buying contact lenses over the Internet and be sure to avail them in trusted stores.

Both glasses and contact lenses have the capability to handle different vision issues, but some prescriptions work better with one solution than the other. Your optometrist can help you understand whether your eye health needs you to wear glasses or use contact lenses.

Eye Concepts is a provider of contact lenses in Australia. Besides offering glasses that can be used by almost anyone, we supply a wide range of reputable contact lenses that may be used for a different period: daily, fortnightly, and monthly.

HOW MANY HOURS A DAY CAN YOU WEAR CONTACT LENSES?

Daily lenses. These are disposable lenses after one day. They don’t require cleaning or storing.

Fortnightly/ Monthly Lenses. These need to be removed every night, cleaned and stored in contact lens solution recommended by your optometrist.

Here are two types of lenses with different wearing time:

  • Daily wear - should be removed every night and cleaned. Most people prefer wearing daily lenses that can be disposed of and don’t require any cleaning or maintenance.

  • Fortnightly/Monthly wear - These lenses are designed for regular contact lens wearers, allowing them to wear the same pair of lenses for up to 2 weeks or one month depending on the design. Lenses are required to be cleaned daily and stored in contact lens cases and solution recommended by your optometrist.

Some factors may also determine how long you can keep your lenses on: your condition, work environment, and sensitivity.

People with dry eyes can still wear contact lenses - just need to consult with an optometrist for them to recommend breathable contact lenses that fit well. Eye drops also help relieve any discomfort during the day while you're wearing contact lenses.

Not all contacts are the same when it comes to their allowed wearing time. They are also made from different materials, which brings us to the five contact lens types that provide different levels of comfort.

  • Silicone Hydrogel Lenses are the most popular in the US. This is an advanced type of lenses which are softer and more porous than regular hydrogel lenses, which allows more oxygen to the cornea.

  • Soft Lenses are made of water-containing plastics called hydrogels. These are thin and can conform to the surface of the eye.

  • Hybrid Contacts are designed for comfort. These have a rigid gas permeable central zone, with a surrounding hydrogel material. However, they may be more challenging to fit and are more expensive compared to silicone hydrogel lenses.

  • Gas Permeable (GP) Lenses fit closer to the eye because they are permeable to oxygen. These lenses can provide sharper vision compared to silicone hydrogel contact, especially for people with astigmatism.

  • PMMA Lenses are made of a material called Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA), a transparent rigid plastic material. However, these ‘hard-contacts’ are hardly used nowadays and have been replaced with GP Lenses for improved comfort and a better flow of oxygen to the eye.

Be aware of the type of contacts you’ve been prescribed to determine how long you can wear them. Whether you are new or have been using it for years, do not hesitate to report any irritation or discomfort to your optometrist.

HOW MUCH DO CONTACT LENSES COST?

The cost of contact lens depends on a number of factors: the type of contacts, your prescription, and where you buy them. Daily contact lenses like Dailies Total1 starts from $210 for a 3-month supply, and fortnightly contacts like Acuvue Oasys starts from $37 for a 6-pack.

Soft contacts that are designed for daily use are usually more affordable than contacts that are approved for long-term and extended use. Specialty contacts cost more than those designed for mild to moderate nearsightedness or farsightedness.
